What are relationship difficulties?
Relationships are a fundamental part of being human. They can bring connection, support, intimacy, and meaning, but they can also be a source of stress, conflict, loneliness, and emotional pain. Difficulties in relationships may arise with partners, family members, friends, colleagues, or in the relationship we have with ourselves.
Sometimes relationship challenges are linked to past experiences, attachment patterns, communication difficulties, life transitions, loss, or repeated cycles that leave us feeling stuck, disconnected, or misunderstood.
Common signs and experiences
- Difficulties with trust or intimacy
- Repeated patterns in relationships that feel unhelpful or painful
- Conflict, communication difficulties, or frequent misunderstandings
- Fear of rejection, abandonment, or vulnerability
- Feeling lonely or disconnected from others
- Challenges setting or maintaining boundaries
- People-pleasing or difficulty expressing needs
- Struggles with self-worth that affect relationships
- Relationship breakdown, separation, or family conflict
How I work
Therapy provides a space to explore your relationships with curiosity, compassion, and greater understanding. Together, we can look at how past experiences, beliefs, emotions, and relational patterns may be influencing your current connections.
As an Integrative Counsellor, CBT Therapist, and Art Psychotherapist, I recognise that relationship difficulties are often about more than the immediate problem. They can reflect deeper needs for safety, belonging, acceptance, and connection. Therapy can help you identify patterns that no longer serve you, develop healthier ways of relating, and strengthen your ability to communicate your thoughts, feelings, and needs.
Creative approaches can be particularly helpful in exploring relational experiences, attachment patterns, and emotions that may be difficult to express in words. CBT-informed techniques may also support greater awareness of unhelpful beliefs and behavioural patterns that affect relationships.
Whether you are struggling in a current relationship, recovering from a relationship ending, navigating family dynamics, or wanting to build a stronger connection with yourself, therapy can offer a supportive space for reflection, growth, and change.
