Weight Management and Body Image

A compassionate, practical space to explore body image, emotional eating, self-esteem and build healthier, lasting habits.

What are weight management and body image difficulties?

Many people struggle with their relationship with food, weight, and their body. Difficulties can develop when concerns about weight, shape, appearance, or eating habits begin to affect self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, confidence, and daily life.

Body image is not simply about how you look—it is about how you think, feel, and behave in relation to your body. Negative body image can lead to self-criticism, unhealthy eating patterns, avoidance behaviours, and ongoing dissatisfaction, even when there is no objective reason to feel unhappy with your appearance.

Common signs and experiences

  • Repeated dieting or difficulty maintaining lifestyle changes
  • Emotional or stress-related eating
  • Preoccupation with weight, shape, or appearance
  • Negative self-talk about your body
  • Low confidence or self-esteem linked to appearance
  • Avoiding social situations, photographs, or certain clothing
  • Cycles of weight loss and regain
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or failure around eating habits
  • Difficulty maintaining motivation for healthy lifestyle goals

How I work

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely researched psychological approaches for supporting sustainable behaviour change, weight management, and improvements in body image. Rather than focusing on quick fixes or restrictive dieting, CBT helps individuals understand the thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that influence their relationship with food, exercise, and self-image.

Together, we can explore the patterns that may be keeping you stuck and develop practical, evidence-based strategies to support lasting change.

Using CBT, we may focus on:

  • Identifying unhelpful thinking patterns about weight, food, and appearance
  • Reducing all-or-nothing thinking and self-criticism
  • Understanding emotional triggers for overeating or unhealthy habits
  • Developing realistic and sustainable behavioural goals
  • Building healthier routines around eating and physical activity
  • Improving motivation and consistency
  • Developing a more balanced and compassionate body image
  • Strengthening self-esteem beyond appearance or weight
  • Maintaining long-term changes and preventing relapse

As an Integrative Counsellor and Art Psychotherapist, I also recognise that difficulties with weight and body image can be influenced by life experiences, relationships, cultural expectations, and emotional wellbeing. Where appropriate, therapy may explore these deeper factors while maintaining a practical, goal-oriented focus on change.

My approach combines scientific evidence with compassion, helping clients develop healthier habits, greater self-understanding, and a more positive relationship with their body.
